.. The Bridge Tour ..
( 26th Apri – 10th of May 2014)
A collaborative art project centered around building networks of artists within SADC region on the basis of collaborative public work and exchange of ideas around social constructions and artistic practices.
Made possible by Ant funding from Pro Helvetia and the Swiss Development and Cooperation Agency
The project was initiated by three South African artists : Lisolomzi Pikoli (Mr Fuzzy Slipperz), Skumbuzo Vabaza (Skubalisto) and Nolan Oswald Dennis. Also joined by friend and traveling partner Ludumo Toni from South Africa.
We travelled through Zimbabwe and Mozambique, creating networks with artists and creative spaces in the southern African region through collaboration on public murals, conversations and exchanges. We had hoped to start in Botswana but alas due to bad communication bureaucracy got the better of us at the border. We hope to be able to visit the country at a later stage.
The tour then saw us traveling through Harare, Beira, Vilanculos and Maputo, in each place the artists explored the local urban landscape, visited artists and art spaces and painted murals. It was an incredible encounter with our states next door neighbors on a self-initiated initiative from the three of us.
In Harare we painted Njelele Art Gallery and a public wall in Waterfall suburb. Our hosts whilst in the city were Dana Whabira curator of the Njelele gallery as well as Tinofireyi Zhou(Aerosol) a street artist and musician originally from Bulawayo. We painted one mural on walls of the Njelele gallery and another one in Waterfall, a suburb in Harare with Zimbabwean artists: Aerosol (Tinofireyi Zhou) ,Nazza aka SEH (Street Elevated Hieroglyphics) and Kasi 1, a South African artist.
In Mozambique we painted in 3 places: Beira, Vilanculous and Maputo. In Beira we painted a rundown hotel reclaimed by Beira locals. In Vilanculous, Skumbuzo painted a vibrant portrait at the backpacker we stayed. In Maputo we were hosted by Mickey Fonseca a Mozambican film maker and owner of Mafalala Libre, we painted a popular street art/graffiti wall at the Mafalala headquarters .
Our last wall painted was in Johannesburg Jeppe’s town too round off the tour. We collaborated with South African/ Mozambique artist Isaac Zevali of Alphabet Zoo and were happy to finish off the tour with one last wall painted at home. With snaps taken by Zuko Nqoro.
This is my photo essay documenting our tour. Through the excitement, drama, work and interactions we had on our road trip. This was all in all a life changing and learning experience for all involved.
Southern Africa and rest of the world are in crazy times as per usual. Me and the hommies are always discussing or trying to make sense of the constructs around us in a reasonable way. Hustling to make make more work and travel when we can. We also learnt a lot of good lessons about keeping execution tight, planning and the importance of giving yourself the space to enjoy work and travel.
Many a story can be told about the experience. Excuse the crazy long essay. It’s important I paint a picture of our trip best I can.
Peace to the beast
Mr Slipperz .
